Haslemere Festival - Events - Road Race / MTB / Sportive

    The Haslemere Festival Cycle events
    17th to 31st May 2009
    Riders and Assistance Required

If any of you have wondered where Graham Hemmings and I have been hibernating over the past few months, we have been busy putting together a programme of cycle events as part of the Haslemere Festival.

The events are now settled and I set out brief details below. This is a fantastic opportunity to introduce both the club and cycling generally to the wider public. There is no doubt that, following the success of Team GB at both the Olympics and the recent major Tours, there is a real momentum to the sport. It was with this in mind that the Festival organisers asked me to put together some events. As so often happens, what started out as fairly unambitious aspirations has snowballed into something rather larger.

Cycleworks have kindly agreed to sponsor all the events and will be providing support on the Sportive.

17th May – Town Centre Road Races
We kick off the Festival with a day of road racing , starting and finishing in the High street around a tough little 3 mile course, with a really beastly incline up Three Gates Lane. The morning has been given over to The League of Veteran Racing Cyclists (LVRC), with Surrey League races in the afternoon, possibly including a Haslemere v Bernay (Haslemere’s twin town from Normandy) race as part of a ‘’Go’’ race, for the overenthusiastic amateur.
The races will be led by Glenn’s Care for Health car and others from Enterprise Cars.
What we need – marshalls, timekeepers, signing-on, beverage boys (and girls) sign erectors etc

25th May – Come & Try Mountain biking
This is being run by Cycleworks from Lion Green (Wey Hill) on the Bank Holiday Monday, along with a whole bunch of other events. They are also bringing their Stunt Jump team, with ridiculously dangerous ramp (don’t try this at home). The idea is to introduce beginners or those who have not ventured far on their bikes to the delights of true off-road trail riding. Cycleworks will provide a number of bikes for those without steads and check over those who do have their own.
What we need – experienced riders to help Cycleworks lead rides up and around Hindhead Common, Gibbett Hill.

31st May – The Haslemere Festival Sportive aka ‘Little Lumpy’
The final week-end of the Festival and we are running a full blown, fully supported Sportive. The web-site, designed by friend and local rider, Keith Stokes, is now live. www.littlelumpy.co.uk We have three distances, 30, 60 and 100 miles, starting and finishing in the centre of Haslemere. Again support from Cycleworks and Care for Health. We are hoping for a real festival atmosphere, with hopefully up to 1,000 riders.
What we need - lots !!
Start pen and signing on organisers
    Marshalls
Drivers for logistics (Enterprise Cars have agreed to supply vehicles)
    Feed stop people
Cake makers (my mum will break the back of this)
    Sign erectors
Certificate printers and tea/cake dispensers at the finish

Whilst we hope that as many of you will want to partake in the events (particularly the Sportive) , wearing the club colours, of course, we equally need a lot of help to make sure that all the events are a real success and run smoothly with as much fun as possible.

    Regards

I'd just like to say a big thank you to Rupert and Graham for coming up with the events for the Haslemere Festival. I don't think many of us realise how huge an undertaking this is. The seeds have been sown but there will still be a lot of work to be done before the events take place. One event is a lot of work but three? The mind boggles. So come on lads and lasses Rupert and Graham will need a lot of volunteers (and their wives/partners) to make this work. The events will be a showcase for the club so please don't let them down.
